TIME TO CELEBRATE

Special events significant to an individual, group, community or even the nation are generally celebrated with announcements or activities that coincide with a date that marks the special event.  Marriage is celebrated on the date of the wedding, our nation’s founding is celebrated on July 4^th and we celebrate special events that show appreciation to our military such as memorial day.  Not immune from these celebrations are the founding of communities across our great nation.

This year, 2017, is a special day for the Farmerville community.  Farmerville will be celebrating its’ 175^th anniversary.  This makes the celebration to be known as the  quartoseptennial anniversary of the founding of Farmerville and this celebration will be a grand event.

A team, under the auspices of the Town of Farmerville, is planning a three day event that will provide a fun time for the community and visitors wishing to celebrate this milestone.  The Chamber of Commerce will host a dinner while the major events will kick off on Saturday.  A parade will be held Saturday morning.  Following the parade a music fest will take place in the middle of town.  Local churches will also hold a trunk-or-treat event that afternoon for the community children.  Sunday will witness a gospel singing and ice cream social on the grounds of the Edgewood Plantation.

The community will be invited to participate.  Local businesses will decorate for the ceremony while a planned essay contest will allow students to participate in the celebration.  The local museum will be preparing a special display to honor the towns founding and a time capsule may be buried with the hope of digging it up for the towns bicentennial, twenty-five years in the future.  A souvenir program is being prepared by the Farmerville Gazette. 

Putting the founding of Farmerville in perspective; Farmerville was chartered a mere 66 years after our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence.  Farmerville became a town eight years before California became a state.  Texas became a state of the United States three years after Farmerville was founded.  Definitely the town is steeped in history and the celebration is well deserved.  Hope to see you at this gala event.

I also wanted to inform you that I will be traveling for abuttwo months.  Bonnie and I installed our security system,  arranged housesitting and we will be touring the West and visiting with people between Louisiana and California.  There will be an occasional article as we witness the diversity of our great nation and we share the experiences with you.
